Revington Arthur’s “Still Life with Bouquet” was sold for $4,000 on May 17th, 2024. This oil on canvas piece, measuring 20” x 24”, is signed lower left and features scattered losses around the edges. Despite being unframed, the artwork drew considerable interest. Arthur, born in Stamford, CT, found inspiration across America and studied under notable artists like George Luks and Arshile Gorky. His works have been exhibited nationwide, including at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Carnegie Institute, and are part of permanent collections at the Brooklyn Museum and Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

“The Black Sail” Surpasses Estimate at Auction

Revington Arthur’s 1952 watercolor “The Black Sail” exceeded expectations at auction, selling for $325 against an estimate of $200-$300. The piece, signed lower left, measures 9 1/4″ x 19 1/4″ (sight) and 19″ x 29″ (framed). Sold by Locati LLC on April 21, 2024, in Pineville, PA, the artwork is reported to be in good condition.

Three Revington Arthur Works Sold During First Quarter of 2024

London auction house Cultural Traditions managed the sale of three Revington Arthur works on Feb. 27, 2024. The sale included:

  • “Five Plates and a Person”;
  • “Ballet Class”; and
  • “Lighthouse.”

Revington Arthur’s 1969 work “Five Plates and a Person” features acrylic on canvas and measures 60 in. x 48 in. with signature on the verso. The piece was sold in good condition without damages and defects. The work was estimated to sell between £4,000 GBP – £8,000 GBP ($5,067.42-$10,134.84 USD) and sold at £6,000 GBP or $7,601.13 USD.

“Ballet Class,” which Arthur also created in 1969, features oil on canvas with the signature located lower right and Babcock Galleries’ label on the verso. The piece measures 25 ¼ in. x 30 ⅓ in., with frame dimensions of 30 ⅓ in. x 35 ½ in. It is in good condition, without defects. The piece was estimated to sell between £2,000 GBP – £4,000 GBP ($2,533.71 USD-$5,067.42 USD), and sold at £3,200 GBP or $4,053.94 USD.

The unframed “Lighthouse” from 1966 features Arthur’s approach to acrylic on canvas and measures 60 ¼ in. x 40 ¼ in. It is in good condition, without defects. The value of the piece was estimated between £2,000 GBP – £4,000 GBP ($2,533.71 USD-$5,067.42 USD) and it sold at £7,500 GBP or $9,501.41 USD.
